Home Decor Ideas: Ready, Set, Accessorize

Home Decor Ideas: Ready, Set, Accessorize

If you have ever ventured to seek home decorating inspiration online or in books and magazines, you probably found an assortment of sensible ideas like: mirrors can make a living space larger or painting a small room with dark color will make it seem smaller. These are all true and proven, except home decorating accessories are mostly left up to one’s imagination and too often they become an intentional clutter. We use objects to accent our homes – objects of artistic value, objects that bring memories, or just any objects we like. What we don’t realize sometimes is that some objects are not decorative at all. Have you ever been in a home where dusting seems like a mission impossible because some forgotten family artifact or a vacation souvenir occupies every two inches of every possible surface? Let’s face it - clutter is rarely attractive. Is there an algorithm for placing the right objects in the right places to bring up the best in our living spaces? We suggest coordinated pieces for those who look to avoid decorating disasters. And if you care to create a clean look and at the same time an inviting atmosphere, aim for a few focal points where each item is given an opportunity to stand out and be appreciated.

Color coordinated accessories work best, especially in smaller spaces, where they harmonize the interior and create a dominant theme. Take for example an assortment of contemporary ceramic vases of varying shapes and sizes like the ones from the Tribal Moss Collection from StudioLX. They, by the way, are irreplaceable for any type of wall or shelving units. Mix with an occasional platter elegantly presented on a fixture or perhaps as a centerpiece. Throw in a couple of cozy pillows, perhaps an ottoman or a decorative box, and consider your work done. The key to keeping it all tied together is color.

Color is an absolute requirement in contemporary home decor. Colors break up the monotony and set the mood for the entire living space. As a vital source of ambiance, colors can influence our mood, stimulating or relaxing our senses. Choosing the right colors is critical for making your home your emotional refuge where you find comfort and warmth. What colors you should choose is truly a reflection of your personality. Observe your reaction to different colors before selecting decorating pieces. Do you prefer the excitement and intensity of red or do you crave the serenity found in calmer colors? Choose the colors that entertain your senses limiting your selection to three or four dominant colors for each living space. This is where the more is not the merrier.

Remember to also stay on high pattern alert. Avoid mixing too many patterns within the same living space. Stripes and floral patterns rarely work well together. Try mixing stripes with solid colored pieces and you will gain a whole new appreciation for their beauty.
Luckily, today’s retail delivers numerous options for home decorators in the market for uniqueness and in the end you’ll finally find those cherished pieces that will set your home apart from any other.

Hi -

Came across your blog and was impressed by your comments.

I am an MBA student at Univ of California, Berkeley. As part of my schoolwork, I am writing a business plan for online catalogs.

The essence of the plan is to build a catalog website that has a vast collection of nice catalogs. The users can view and search these catalogs. However the result of the search would be a "decor", that is a catalog page and not an item. So, for example, if you have searched for "tealights", the search would yield the internet catalog page from Chiasso that has the tealight placed along with a chandelier and other items that complete the decor - like here:http://www.chiasso.com/catalog/viewCatalog.aspx?catalogid=33

The website would offer direct shopping where you could click on the item in the catalog to shop. But most importantly, the website would offer features like 1) users writing review on catalog pages, 2) tagging items on catalogs so that they recall them in future, 3) sharing catalog pages of their choice with friends, 4) requesting for friend's opinion on items etc. Further, such a website, would also be a single point for you to receive your favorite catalogs and merchant promotions.

Ofcourse, its hard to say if this would go impress my professors at Berkeley, but at the least, I'd like a decent grade :-) And I feel, given the quality of your writing on the blog, your advice could be crucial. So, can you please answer a few questions for me and send them to:

aamir_qureshy@mba.berkeley.edu

1. Do you order from any paper catalogs? If so, which ones and how often? Do you order from the same catalogs online?

2. How do you feel about decor based internet shopping as I have described above? Would you enjoy it (rate on a scale of 5)? Do you feel it would influence you to shop more from the same merchant than when you just search for individual item?

3. Do they buy on impulse from catalogs? That is, do you often buy items that you weren't seeking, but felt attracted to them because of the imagination that catalogs stoke? If so, do you feel that same impulse erode when you read the catalog on paper but have to order online?

4. To what extent are you influenced by others in your social network while shopping online (rate on a scale of 5)?

5. To what extent are you influenced by others in your social network while shopping OFFLINE? (rate on a scale of 5)?

6. How do you feel about using a catalog website as described above to share your styles and preferences with people in your social network?

7. Do you feel that sharing and displaying your preferences would increase the chance of influencing someone in your social network to shop (rate on a scale of 5)?

8. How often would you use such a website (never/sometimes/often/very often)? Which feature did you like the most and which feature did you like the least?

9. Any other feature that you'd like to see in such a website?

10. Your age and sex?

Regards and thanks!

Wonderful finds here! Also, I found something interesting I thought I would share. A way of displaying both photos and your family name in a very personalize way. There’s a website called AlphabaetPIX where you can create a word or name using elegant black & white photos of architecture and nature. This is possible because the photos are shot in such a way that they also form the shape of a letter of the alphabet. After you type in your name on the homepage, the next page displays a frame with blank windows where your photos will go. You click on these one at a time for each letter in your name, and are given a number of photo letter choices from which to pick and fill your frame. The artwork can be designed entirely by you, online, in minutes. You can even see your final design on the website.

You really have to see it/design one to get how cool this is.
Check out the concept here: http://www.alphabetpix.com

Here's more information from the website,
